Reasons for Switching to Wolfram Mathematica: Mathematica was free at the University of Washington but MATLAB wasn't. Also MATLAB is clunky for solving symbolic math and I was excited to use Mathametica to do calculus. Wolfram Mathematica

The site license covers the Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma campuses. Mathematica passwords and activation keys will only be distributed to 'u.washington.edu' 'uw.edu' or 'uwb.edu' email addresses.

UW Owned Computers:
Under this license currently registered UW students, faculty and staff are eligible to use Mathematica on University-owned equipment. It is expected that all UW owned computers that normally stay on campus will utilize the Physics run License Server: MathLM.phys.washington.edu During activation you can enter the DNS name of our server 'MathLM.phys.washington.edu' and this will activate the software. NOTE: This should only be done for machines that will stay on campus. If there are technical reasons why you can not utilize the campus license server please contact mathematica@uw.edu

Student Personal Computers:
Currently enrolled students at the Seattle, Bothell, or Tacoma campus may install Mathematica on their personally-owned computer for free.

Faculty, Staff Home use:
Through this license UW faculty and staff only are eligible to request a free Mathematica license for their personally-owned computer under the Home-use program.

Currently FREE as of June 28th 2019. Several dedicated departments and colleges pulled funds together to renew the campus-wide site license for Mathematica.

Software Overview:

Mathematica is a general computing environment, organizing many algorithmic, visualization, and user interface capabilities within a document-like user interface paradigm.

Since version 1.0 in 1988, Mathematica has steadily expanded into more and more general computational capabilities. Besides addressing nearly every field of mathematics, it provides cross-platform support for a wide range of tasks such as giving computationally interactive presentations, a multifaceted language for data integration, graphics editing, and symbolic user interface construction.

This product is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux/Unix.

    Follow the directions below to download software from Wolfram and request the appropriate activation key.


    1. NOTE: Use your UW email address('u.washington.edu' 'uw.edu' or 'uwb.edu').
    2. Go to user.wolfram.com and 'Login' or 'Create Account' with your UW Email Address
    3. Check your email and click the link to validate your Wolfram ID
    4. Fill out this form to request an Activation Key [Choose the product: Mathematica for Sites(Single Machine)]
    5. Click on the Product you want to Download
    6. Click 'Get Downloads'
    7. Select the Version and OS and download the software.
    8. After downloading Install the software
    9. When asked to Activate via License Server type 'MathLM.phys.washington.edu'
    10. If NOT asked to enter server name, choose 'Other Ways to actiavte' and choose 'Connect to Network License Server'
  • Faculty and staff personally owned machines

    1. Create an account (New users only):
      1. Go to user.wolfram.com and click 'Create Account'
      2. Fill out form using a UW email address('u.washington.edu' 'uw.edu' or 'uwb.edu' ) as your Wolfram ID.
      3. Check your email and click the link to validate your Wolfram ID
    2. Request the download and key:
      1. Mac users - Some users experience problems with FORM below when using Safari browser. If you encounter an issue try a different browser.
      2. Fill out this form to request an Activation Key
      3. Click the 'Product Summary page' link to access your license
      4. Click 'Get Downloads' and select 'Download' next to your platform
      5. Run the installer on your machine, and enter Activation Key at prompt

Wolfram Mathematica Calculator

Wolfram Mathematica software: The annual campus site license contract renewal is coordinated by COSL with multiple University departments. It covers all Faculty, Staff, and Students at UCSB.

For Faculty and staff: A short informational form is required, in order to receive the instructions for obtaining an activation code.

Please contact COSL in order to fill out the appropriate form to receive a Mathematica download and activation key.

Mathematica is currently installed in the following locations:

  • Computer labs
  • All general or public-access labs and many departmental labs.
  • Computer clusters

The University of California at Santa Barbara's Mathematica license can be used for grid computing. If you are interested in using Mathematica for parallel computing on a dedicated cluster, or in a distributed grid environment, please contact Paul Fish at Wolfram Research.

Faculty and staff home use and personal computer use is available under our new contract. Please contact COSL in order to receive access for your home use.

Wolfram Mathematica Free Download

Mathematica 11.3 for Linux no longer supports 32-bit Linux but is compatible with most 64-bit Linux distributions. Mathematica users at your site who are running a 32-bit version of Linux can continue to use Mathematica 11.2. The installer for Mathematica 11.2 will remain in their Wolfram User Portal
